Scherzo 6. Rondo Serenade No. 1 (Op. 11) was composed in 1858, while Brahms enjoyed a position in the tiny court of Detmold, the capital of the Principality of Lippe. The original work, now lost, is said to have been scored for chamber orchestra with a wind section of flute, two clarinets, horn and bassoon. Unfortunately, only Brahms later version for full orchestra remains.
