Why Every Trekker Falls in Love with Dodital – Darwa Pass

The Dodital – Darwa Pass Trek offers an immersive journey into the lush, unspoiled forests of the Assi Ganga Valley. Spanning approximately 40 kilometers, this trek begins in the picturesque Agoda village and culminates at the pristine Dodital Lake, situated at an elevation of 3,024 meters. The adventure continues with a challenging ascent to Darwa Pass, reaching an altitude of 4,151 meters.

Dodital Lake, also known locally as Dhundi-tal or Ganesha-katal, is revered as the sacred birthplace of Lord Ganesha. This freshwater lake is the primary source of the Assi Ganga River, which later converges with the Bhagirathi River. During winter, the lake often becomes partially frozen, with its surroundings blanketed in snow, creating a serene winter landscape. A Ganpati temple is located on the lake’s eastern shore, nestled in the Barahat range.

The trek to Dodital Lake features breathtaking scenery, including charming mountain villages, dense vegetation, and verdant landscapes adorned with numerous streams and rugged rock faces. As the elevation increases, the path is lined with majestic pine, deodar, and oak trees, enhancing the natural beauty of the ascent.

The route to Darwa Pass requires a substantial elevation gain of over 1,100 meters from Dodital and offers stunning panoramic views of Mt. Bandarpoonch, Mt. Srikanth, Draupadika Danda, Mt. Jaunli, Deoli Peak, and Black Peak. Historically, Darwa Pass has served as a gateway to Yamunotri via Hanuman Chatti, a route frequented by pilgrims for centuries. The pass can be covered in knee-deep snow early in the winter season, adding to the trek challenge.

This trek presents a rigorous adventure, particularly due to the significant elevation gain and potential snow conditions in winter. Optimal trekking periods are from April to June for a summer experience and from October to December to witness the winter transformation.
