The Leh to Umling La Cycling Expedition is the ultimate test of human endurance. Starting from Leh (11,500 ft), the capital of Ladakh, this journey takes you through rugged terrain, mighty passes, freezing winds, and thin air — ultimately leading to Umling La Pass (19,024 ft), the highest motorable road in the world, near the Indo-China border.

This expedition is not only a cycling challenge, but also a spiritual and cultural journey through the mystical land of Ladakh. The route covers remote high-altitude villages, stunning lakes like Pangong & Tso Moriri, monasteries perched on cliffs, and the vast Changthang Plateau inhabited by nomadic tribes (Changpas).

Riding a cycle at such extreme altitudes is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, where every pedal stroke demands determination — but rewards you with panoramic Himalayan views, untouched landscapes, and the glory of reaching Umling La on your own wheels.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Leh.

Altitude: Leh – 3500 m | Stay: Hotel.

  • Arrive at Leh, the capital of Ladakh, located in the heart of the Trans-Himalayan region. As you step into this high-altitude desert, you will instantly be mesmerized by the barren yet beautiful landscapes, with snow-capped peaks in the backdrop.
This day is kept light to allow your body to begin acclimatizing to the thin air. In the evening, you can stroll around the Leh market, visit the Shanti Stupa for a panoramic view, or simply rest.

Day 2Rest and Acclimatization in Leh.

Altitude: Leh – 3500 m | Stay: Hotel.

A crucial acclimatization day to prepare your body for the higher altitudes ahead. In the morning, you can go for short acclimatization walks around Leh. Optional sightseeing includes Leh Palace, Hemis Monastery, or Thiksey Monastery. This also serves as the briefing day, where your expedition leader explains the route, cycling techniques at high altitude, and safety protocols.

Day 3Leh to Tirido Via Upshi.

Ride Distance: 95 km approx. | Ride Duration: 6-7 hours approx. | Altitude: Tirido-  3750 m | Upshi- 3610 m | Stay: Hotel. | GPS DATA

Your cycling journey begins! Riding out of Leh, you follow the Indus River upstream, passing small villages and barren mountains. The route gradually ascends with a mix of smooth tarmac and occasional rough patches. After crossing Upshi, known for its beautiful views, the road continues to Tirido, where you rest for the night. This is a long but manageable day that helps build endurance.

Day 4Tirido to Nyoma Via Chumathang.

Ride Distance: 90 km approx. | Ride Duration: 7-8 hours approx. | Altitude: Nyoma – 4180 m | Chumathang – 3950 m | Stay: Hotel. | GPS DATA

Today’s ride is scenic, following the Indus River valley. The highlight of the day is Chumathang, famous for its natural hot springs that bubble up along the riverbank. The road gains gradual altitude and becomes more rugged as you approach Nyoma, a remote settlement and an important military base. The thin air will be more noticeable here, and you’ll need to pace yourself well.

Day 5Nyoma to Hanle.

Ride Distance: 75 km approx. | Ride Duration: 7-8 hours approx. | Altitude: Hanle – 4500 m | Stay: Hotel. | GPS DATA

The journey to Hanle takes you deeper into the Changthang region of Ladakh, a cold desert plateau inhabited by the nomadic Changpa tribes. The route is dotted with prayer flags, grazing yaks, and dramatic mountains. Hanle itself is a unique destination—home to one of the world’s highest astronomical observatories and a remote monastery. You’ll notice the oxygen levels dropping as you reach 4,500 m.

Day 6Rest and Acclimatization at Hanle.

Altitude: Hanle- 4500 m | Stay: Hotel.

A very important acclimatization day at Hanle. Given the upcoming extreme altitudes, this rest day allows your body to adapt before attempting higher passes. You can explore Hanle Monastery, interact with locals, or visit the Hanle Observatory (if accessible). A calm day to recharge for the toughest part of the expedition.

Day 7Hanle to Chisumle via Nirbula Pass.

Ride Distance: 75 km approx. | Ride Duration: 8-9 hours approx. | Altitude: Nirbula Pass – 5310m | Chisumle-? | Stay: Hotel. | GPS DATA

Today is the most challenging ride so far. You ascend to Nurbula Pass (5,310 m), a true high-altitude pass, testing both stamina and mental strength. The climb is steep and demanding, with loose gravel and thinner oxygen levels. After crossing the pass, you descend to Chisumle, a remote hamlet located near the base of Umling La. This night’s rest is crucial before your summit ride.

Day 8Chisumle to Umling La Pass to Hanle.

Ride Distance: 40 km approx. | Ride Duration: 6-7 hours approx. | Altitude: Umling-La -5798 m | Hanle – 4500 m | Stay: Hotel. | GPS DATA

The summit day—the highlight of the expedition. You begin the final climb to Umling La (5,798 m / 19,024 ft), officially the world’s highest motorable pass. The road is steep, exposed, and extremely demanding due to low oxygen levels. Every pedal stroke requires immense effort, but reaching the top is a once-in-a-lifetime achievement. After celebrations and photos at the pass, descend back to Hanle for the night.
