Phulara Ridge Trek – A Walk on the Sky’s Edge

The Phulara Ridge Trek is a rare Himalayan experience located in the Govind Pashu Vihar National Park, Uttarakhand. Standing at an altitude of 12,150 ft (3,704 m), this trek is unlike any other because of its long ridge walk—a feature very few treks in India offer. Instead of climbing to a single summit or crossing a pass, you spend hours walking along the top of a mountain ridge, with 360° panoramic views of snow-capped peaks and valleys on either side.

The journey begins from the picturesque village of Sankri, winding through dense pine and oak forests, blooming rhododendrons (in spring), and wide alpine meadows. The trail gradually ascends to reveal a breathtaking landscape dominated by peaks such as Swargarohini, Kala Nag, Bandarpoonch, and Ranglana.

The highlight of the trek is the Phulara Ridge walk itself—a thrilling experience where you feel as though you’re walking on the edge of the sky, surrounded by towering Himalayan giants and endless rolling valleys. The ridge stretches for several kilometers, making it a unique adventure filled with both serenity and exhilaration.

In addition to its natural beauty, the trek also offers chances to spot Himalayan wildlife like monals, Himalayan griffons, and black bears within the protected forest area.

With a moderate level of difficulty, the Phulara Ridge Trek is perfect for both beginners seeking their first high-altitude adventure and seasoned trekkers looking for something different. Best experienced between May–June and September–October, this trek is a hidden gem that leaves you with memories of walking amidst the clouds.

Itinerary

Day 1Drive from Dehradun to Sankri.

Drive Distance: 220 km | Drive Duration: 9-10 hours approx. | Altitude: Sankri – 1950m | Pick up point: ISBT, Dehradun

The journey begins from Dehradun, where trekkers assemble in the morning for a long but incredibly scenic drive to Sankri, the base camp for the Phulara Ridge Trek. The route winds through the beautiful hill towns and valleys of Uttarakhand, following the course of the Tons River, a major tributary of the Yamuna.

The drive takes you through lush pine forests, terraced fields, and charming villages, with views of the lower Himalayan ranges unfolding throughout the journey. Along the way, you pass through Mori, Purola, and Netwar, towns that give you a glimpse of Garhwali culture and mountain life.

By evening, you arrive at Sankri (1,950 m), a quaint Himalayan village nestled amidst pine forests and surrounded by snow-clad peaks. Sankri is not only the gateway to Phulara Ridge but also to many famous treks like Kedarkantha and Har Ki Dun. After checking into a guesthouse or homestay, you can spend the evening exploring the village, meeting locals, or watching the sunset paint the surrounding peaks in golden hues.

Overnight stay at Sankri.

Day 2Sankri to Juda-ka-Talab.

Trek Distance: 5km approx. | Trek Duration: 5-6 hours approx. | Altitude: Juda-ka-Talab – 2800m.GPS DATA

After breakfast in Sankri, you begin your trek towards Juda-ka-Talab, one of the most enchanting campsites in the Himalayas. The trail starts with a gradual ascent through dense pine, maple, and oak forests, where the crisp mountain air and earthy aroma of the woods set the tone for your journey. The climb is steady, with occasional clearings that open up to reveal stunning views of the snow-clad peaks around Sankri.

As you gain altitude, the forest becomes denser and livelier with the calls of Himalayan birds. In spring, the trail comes alive with blooming rhododendrons, while in winter, it transforms into a snow-covered fairyland. The final stretch of the trek opens into a serene alpine meadow, leading you to the pristine Juda-ka-Talab campsite (2,800 m).

Juda-ka-Talab, a small high-altitude lake surrounded by forests, carries a mystical charm. Legends say it was once formed from a single drop of Lord Shiva’s water pot. The still waters of the lake reflect the surrounding trees and sky, creating a picture-perfect scene. The campsite is also an excellent acclimatization stop, offering a balance of forest cover, open meadows, and mountain vistas.

Spend the evening soaking in the beauty of the lake, capturing photographs, and relaxing under a star-studded night sky. Overnight stay in tents at Juda-ka-Talab.

Day 3Juda-ka-Talab to Bhoj Gadi.

Trek Distance: 5 km approx.  | Trek Duration: 4-5 hrs approx. | Altitude: Bhoj Gadi– 3400 m. |   GPS DATA

After breakfast at the serene Juda-ka-Talab campsite, the trail gradually ascends towards Bhoj Gadi, taking you deeper into the higher altitudes of the trek. The name “Bhoj Gadi” comes from the abundance of Bhojpatra (Himalayan birch) trees, whose bark was once used for writing in ancient times.

The trail begins with a climb through dense pine and oak forests, which slowly thin out as you approach higher ground. The canopy opens up, and the landscape transitions into alpine meadows dotted with Bhojpatra trees, where you can enjoy unobstructed views of the surrounding valleys and distant Himalayan peaks.

As you trek higher, the Swargarohini, Kala Nag, and Bandarpoonch ranges begin to appear more prominently, setting a breathtaking backdrop. In spring and summer, the meadows are sprinkled with wildflowers, while in late autumn, the crisp air and golden light create a magical trekking atmosphere.

By afternoon, you reach Bhoj Gadi (3,400 m), a wide, scenic campsite surrounded by towering ridgelines and snow-clad peaks. The open setting offers a perfect spot for stargazing at night, with clear skies often revealing the dazzling Milky Way.

Spend the evening acclimatizing, exploring the meadow, and preparing for the exciting ridge walk ahead. Overnight stay in tents at Bhoj Gadi.

Day 4Bhoj Gadi to Pushtara Via Phulara Ridge.

Trek Distance: 9 km approx. | Trek Duration: 6-7 hrs approx. | Altitude: Pushtara– 2800m | Phulara Ridge– 3703 m. | GPS DATA

Today is the most awaited day of the trek—the mesmerizing Phulara Ridge walk. After an early breakfast at Bhoj Gadi, the trail climbs steadily through alpine slopes before opening up to the Phulara Ridge (3,703 m), a stretch that makes this trek truly one of a kind in the Himalayas.

Unlike summit climbs or pass crossings, here you walk along the spine of the mountain ridge for several kilometers, with the world unfolding on both sides. On one side, the snow-draped giants of Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Kala Nag, and Ranglana dominate the horizon, while deep valleys and rolling meadows stretch endlessly on the other. The sensation of walking “on the sky’s edge” with 360° panoramic views is both exhilarating and humbling.

The ridge itself is a gentle walk once you’re on top, making it possible to soak in the grandeur without the strain of steep climbing. Seasonal variations make the ridge even more magical—wildflowers and greenery in summer, golden-brown meadows in autumn, and at times, a snow-dusted wonderland in early spring.

After spending hours traversing the ridge, you begin a gradual descent towards the lush meadows of Pushtara (2,800 m). The campsite here is vast and scenic, with undulating grasslands perfect for relaxing after the thrilling ridge walk. On clear evenings, sunset over the meadows paints the sky in hues of orange and pink, while nights offer dazzling stargazing opportunities.

Overnight stay in tents at Pushtara.

Day 5Pushtara to Taluka, And Drive to Sankri.

Trek Distance: 8 km approx.  | Trek Duration: 5-6 hrs approx. | Drive Distance: 12 km | Drive Duration: 1 hour approx.Altitude: Taluka– 2110 m. | Sankri- 1950 m. | GPS DATA

After breakfast at the beautiful Pushtara meadows, you begin your final descent towards Taluka village. The trail gradually winds down through rolling grasslands before re-entering the dense forests of pine, oak, and rhododendron. The fresh mountain breeze, birdsong, and occasional streams along the way make this descent refreshing and enjoyable.

As you walk further, the trail becomes livelier with signs of civilization—grazing cattle, shepherd huts, and small hamlets along the way. The gradual transition from alpine meadows to forested trails and then into villages is a reminder of the incredible diversity the Himalayas offer within just a few days of trekking.

By afternoon, you reach Taluka (2,110 m), a traditional mountain village with stone-and-wood houses that mark the end of the trekking route. From here, a short 12 km drive (about 1 hour) brings you back to Sankri (1,950 m), where your journey had first begun.

At Sankri, you can finally relax with the comforts of a guesthouse or homestay, celebrating the successful completion of the Phulara Ridge Trek. The evening is perfect for sharing stories with fellow trekkers, capturing sunset views one last time, and soaking in the peaceful vibe of the Himalayas.
