Why is Aali Bedni Bugyal a Must-Do Trek?

Aali Bedni Bugyal is one of the most enchanting alpine meadow treks in Uttarakhand, nestled in the heart of the Garhwal Himalayas. Stretching across vast carpets of lush green grasslands at an altitude of around 3,350 meters (11,000 feet), this trek is a magical blend of natural beauty, mythology, and Himalayan grandeur.

The bugyals (meadows) of Aali and Bedni are famous for their breathtaking views of some of India’s highest peaks, including Nanda Ghunti and Trishul Parvat, which rise like towering sentinels above the rolling pastures. These meadows also hold deep spiritual significance—Bedni Kund, a serene high-altitude lake, is an important site in Hindu mythology, believed to be associated with Goddess Nanda Devi.

What makes the Aali Bedni Bugyal trek truly unique is the diversity of landscapes it offers in such a short span. The trail winds through dense oak and rhododendron forests, charming mountain hamlets, and finally opens into sweeping meadows where wildflowers bloom in summer and the ground turns golden in autumn. Every step feels like walking into a postcard.

The highlight of the trek is camping in the meadows themselves—sleeping under a star-filled sky with the mighty Himalayas as your backdrop is an experience that stays with you forever. In spring, rhododendrons paint the forest in shades of red and pink, while winter transforms the meadows into a pristine snowfield, offering a completely different charm.

Whether you’re a beginner looking for your first Himalayan adventure or an experienced trekker seeking soulful landscapes, Aali Bedni Bugyal delivers the perfect mix of beauty, culture, and serenity. It is more than just a trek—it’s a journey into the heart of Uttarakhand’s alpine paradise.

ITINERARY

Day 1Drive from Dehradun to Lohajung.

Drive Distance: 250 Km.approx. | Drive Duration: 10-11 hrs approx.| Altitude: Lohajung – 2300 m.

The adventure begins early morning from Dehradun. The drive takes you along the sacred Alaknanda River, passing towns like Devprayag, Rudraprayag, and Karnaprayag—where holy rivers converge to form the mighty Ganga. With every turn, the Himalayas draw nearer, the air gets crisper, and the scenery more enchanting. The road climbs steadily through pine and deodar forests, winding past charming villages and terraced fields.

By evening, you arrive at Lohajung, a quaint mountain hamlet surrounded by thick forests and snow-covered peaks. Legend has it that Lohajung is named after the mythical “war of Lohas (iron)” between Goddess Parvati and a demon. From here, glimpses of Nanda Ghunti peak can be seen on clear days. Settle into your guesthouse, meet your trek leader, and attend a briefing session before resting for the night.

Day 2Lohajung to Didna village.

Trek Distance: 6-7 km approx. | Trek Duration: 5-6 hrs approx. | Altitude: Didna Village –2450 m. | GPS DATA

Your trek kicks off with a descent through forested trails alive with the fragrance of pine and oak. The path gradually opens to small clearings and mountain streams, where you may spot locals herding cattle. After crossing the Raan Ka Dhar and a sturdy wooden bridge over the Raan River, the trail ascends steadily toward Didna.

Didna Village is a traditional Himalayan hamlet with stone-roofed houses and lush terraced farms. Staying here offers a glimpse into the Garhwali way of life—warm hospitality, simple food, and mountain traditions. The evening is perfect for exploring the village, interacting with locals, or simply soaking in the peaceful surroundings before calling it a night.

Day 3Didna village to Khobal Tal Via Aali Bugyal.

Trek Distance: 9-10 km approx. | Trek Duration: 7-8  hrs approx. | Altitude: Khobal Tal –3450 m. | GPS DATA

Today’s trail is one of the most rewarding sections of the trek. The climb starts with a steep ascent through oak and rhododendron forests that burst into vibrant red and pink blossoms during spring. After a few hours of hiking, the trail suddenly opens into the breathtaking alpine pastures of Aali Bugyal.

Imagine walking on a vast green carpet spread across rolling hills, with the majestic Trishul (7,120 m) and Nanda Ghunti (6,309 m) peaks towering right in front of you. The meadow is dotted with grazing sheep and wildflowers, making it feel like a scene straight out of a fairytale.

After spending time soaking in the grandeur of Aali Bugyal, continue trekking toward Khobal Tal, a high-altitude lake nestled amidst the meadows. The campsite here offers spectacular sunset views with golden rays illuminating the snow-clad peaks. Camping under a blanket of stars by the lakeside is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Day 4Khobal to Ghairoli Patal Via Bedni Bugyal.

Trek Distance: 6-7 km approx. | Trek Duration: 5-6  hrs approx. | Altitude: Bedni Top–3810m. | Ghairoli Patal – 3200 m. | GPS DATA

Wake up to the magical sight of the Himalayas glowing with the morning sun. Today’s trek takes you across Bedni Bugyal, the twin meadow of Aali and equally stunning in its beauty. Here lies the sacred Bedni Kund, a high-altitude lake with immense mythological importance. It is believed that Goddess Nanda Devi’s wedding procession passed through these meadows, and every 12 years, the grand Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra begins here.

At Bedni Top, panoramic views unfold—Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, and the Chaukhamba ranges stand tall, leaving you spellbound. After spending time in this divine landscape, the trail descends through oak and rhododendron forests to Ghairoli Patal, a picturesque campsite tucked inside the woods. Falling asleep to the sounds of rustling leaves and chirping crickets makes this night unforgettable.

Day 5Ghairoli Patal to Wan and Drive to Lohajung .

Trek Distance: 6-7 km approx. | Trek Duration: 5-6 hrs approx  | Drive Distance: 16 km approx. | Drive Duration: 1 hour approx.| Altitude: Wan– 2450 m. | Lohajung-2300 m. | GPS DATA

Your final day on the trail begins with a descent through enchanting forests filled with oak, pine, and rhododendron. Along the way, you’ll cross Neel Ganga, a sparkling mountain stream where trekkers often stop to refresh and dip their feet in icy-cold waters. The trail then leads to Wan Village, known for its traditional wooden houses and vibrant local culture.

From Wan, a short drive brings you back to Lohajung, where you’ll check into your stay, celebrate the successful completion of your trek, and relive the moments around a warm dinner.

Day 6Drive from Lohajung to Dehradun.

After breakfast, bid farewell to the mountains as you begin your return journey to Dehradun. Though the trek concludes, the memories of walking through the twin alpine meadows of Aali and Bedni will stay with you forever.
