The Hampta Pass Trek is one of the most dramatic and scenic crossover treks in the Indian Himalayas. Spanning just 5 days, it takes you from the lush green Kullu Valley to the barren, moon-like landscapes of Lahaul & Spiti, offering a surreal contrast in terrains that few treks can match.
Ideal for both beginners and seasoned trekkers, the trail features dense pine forests, wildflower-filled meadows, glacial valleys, river crossings, and a thrilling climb to the Hampta Pass at 14,100 ft. The adventure concludes with a visit to the mystical Chandratal Lake, known for its ever-changing colors and mirror-like reflection of the surrounding peaks.
This trek is a journey of diversity and wonder. You’ll witness the gentle, verdant slopes of Kullu, and within a few days, find yourself surrounded by the stark, dramatic beauty of Lahaul & Spiti. Alpine meadows, icy streams, and panoramic views of the mighty Himalayas make every step an unforgettable experience. For photographers, nature lovers, and adventure seekers, the scenery is nothing short of magical.
Hampta Pass is not just about the views; it’s about the experience. Crossing the pass at over 14,100 feet is a test of endurance, a celebration of nature’s grandeur, and a memory that stays with every trekker long after the journey ends. Along the way, you’ll encounter the warmth of local culture, the thrill of camping under starry skies, and the satisfaction of conquering one of Himachal’s most beautiful high-altitude trails.
Whether you’re a first-time trekker or an experienced adventurer, Hampta Pass delivers an unmatched blend of challenge, beauty, and exhilaration. It’s no wonder that trekkers from across the world dream of walking this trail — where every bend, every meadow, and every peak tells a story of adventure.

Trek Distance: 7 km approx. | Trek Duration: 6 – 7 hours approx. | Altitude: Bhalu ka ghera– 3600m | GPS DATA
Today’s trek involves a steady ascent through vibrant wildflower-filled meadows and increasingly rocky terrain. The trail offers a beautiful contrast of lush greenery and rugged mountain features. As you gain altitude, the views become more dramatic, with the majestic Dhauladhar range slowly coming into full view. Along the way, listen to the sounds of the river and wind through high-altitude grasslands. Bhalu Ka Ghera, meaning “Bear’s Circle,” is a scenic campsite surrounded by raw Himalayan wilderness — a perfect place to unwind and soak in the mountain energy.
Trek Distance: 7 – 8 km approx. | Trek Duration: 10 hrs approx. | Altitude: Hampta Pass- 4297 m | Shea Goru – 3900m | GPS DATA
This is the most challenging and rewarding day of the trek as you cross the dramatic Hampta Pass. The climb begins early, with steep ascents over boulder fields and patches of snow. As you reach the top of the pass, you’re greeted with breathtaking 360° views—lush Kullu Valley on one side and the stark, barren beauty of Lahaul Valley on the other. After taking in the views and a well-deserved break at the pass, begin the steep descent into Lahaul. The landscape transforms into a cold desert as you follow a glacial stream down to Shea Goru, a peaceful campsite surrounded by towering mountains and moraine slopes. The long day ends with a sense of accomplishment and a stunning Himalayan sunset.
Trek Distance: 7 km approx. | Trek Duration: 5 – 6 hrs approx. | Altitude: Chhatru– 3350m | GPS DATA
Today’s trek is a descent through a rugged landscape of scree, loose rocks, and glacial moraines. The trail demands focus as you navigate the uneven terrain, but the stark beauty of the Lahaul Valley makes every step worth it. Surrounded by barren mountains and icy streams, the scenery is raw and dramatic. As you descend lower, signs of civilization begin to appear, eventually leading you to the roadhead at Chhatru. Here, your vehicles will be waiting, marking the end of your incredible journey through two contrasting valleys—lush Kullu and arid Lahaul.
You can visit Chandratal if the road and weather condition permits us. (Drive distance 50 km approx | Duration: 4 – 5 hours approx) If not, you will have to stay at Chhatru, the next day drive from Chhatru to Manali, and skip Chandratal altogether.
Drive Distance: 65 km approx. | Drive Duration: 3 – 4 hours approx. | Drop point: Manali Bridge
After days of trekking through the high Himalayas, enjoy a scenic drive back to Manali. The journey takes you through the iconic Atal Tunnel, one of the highest road tunnels in the world, offering a unique experience as you transition from the stark, barren beauty of Lahaul to the vibrant, green landscapes of Kullu Valley. Along the way, witness the dramatic shift in terrain, climate, and culture. Snow-dusted peaks give way to pine forests and apple orchards, bringing a sense of warmth and completion. Once you reach Manali Bridge, your unforgettable Hampta Pass adventure officially comes to an end — filled with memories, new friendships, and a deep connection to the mountains.
