The Leh to Umling La Cycling Expedition is more than just a cycling challenge — it’s an ultimate journey of endurance, spirit, and discovery. From the historic town of Leh (11,500 ft), the gateway to Ladakh, this adventure pushes you across rugged mountain passes, windswept plateaus, and oxygen-thin altitudes — leading you to Umling La Pass (19,024 ft), the highest motorable road in the world.

Arrive at Leh, the capital of Ladakh, located in the heart of the Trans-Himalayan region. As you step into this high-altitude desert, you will instantly be mesmerized by the barren yet beautiful landscapes, with snow-capped peaks in the backdrop.
This day is kept light to allow your body to begin acclimatizing to the thin air. In the evening, you can stroll around the Leh market, visit the Shanti Stupa for a panoramic view, or simply rest.

A crucial acclimatization day to prepare your body for the higher altitudes ahead. In the morning, you can go for short acclimatization walks around Leh. Optional sightseeing includes Leh Palace, Hemis Monastery, or Thiksey Monastery. This also serves as the briefing day, where your expedition leader explains the route, cycling techniques at high altitude, and safety protocols.

Your cycling journey begins! Riding out of Leh, you follow the Indus River upstream, passing small villages and barren mountains. The route gradually ascends with a mix of smooth tarmac and occasional rough patches. After crossing Upshi, known for its beautiful views, the road continues to Tirido, where you rest for the night. This is a long but manageable day that helps build endurance.

Today’s ride is scenic, following the Indus River valley. The highlight of the day is Chumathang, famous for its natural hot springs that bubble up along the riverbank. The road gains gradual altitude and becomes more rugged as you approach Nyoma, a remote settlement and an important military base. The thin air will be more noticeable here, and you’ll need to pace yourself well.

The journey to Hanle takes you deeper into the Changthang region of Ladakh, a cold desert plateau inhabited by the nomadic Changpa tribes. The route is dotted with prayer flags, grazing yaks, and dramatic mountains. Hanle itself is a unique destination—home to one of the world’s highest astronomical observatories and a remote monastery. You’ll notice the oxygen levels dropping as you reach 4,500 m.

A very important acclimatization day at Hanle. Given the upcoming extreme altitudes, this rest day allows your body to adapt before attempting higher passes. You can explore Hanle Monastery, interact with locals, or visit the Hanle Observatory (if accessible). A calm day to recharge for the toughest part of the expedition.
Ride Distance: 75 km approx. | Ride Duration: 8-9 hours approx. | Altitude: Nirbula Pass – 5310m | Chisumle-5669 m | Stay: Hotel. | GPS DATA
Today is the most challenging ride so far. You ascend to Nurbula Pass (5,310 m), a true high-altitude pass, testing both stamina and mental strength. The climb is steep and demanding, with loose gravel and thinner oxygen levels. After crossing the pass, you descend to Chisumle, a remote hamlet located near the base of Umling La. This night’s rest is crucial before your summit ride.

The summit day—the highlight of the expedition. You begin the final climb to Umling La (5,798 m / 19,024 ft), officially the world’s highest motorable pass. The road is steep, exposed, and extremely demanding due to low oxygen levels. Every pedal stroke requires immense effort, but reaching the top is a once-in-a-lifetime achievement. After celebrations and photos at the pass, descend back to Hanle for the night.

Board your support vehicle for the long return drive to Leh. The journey retraces beautiful stretches of the Indus valley, with changing landscapes all along the way. Evening free in Leh to celebrate the successful completion of the expedition.

Payment & Booking Policy
A booking fee of ₹10,000 is required to confirm your spot. The remaining trek fee must be paid at least 15 days before the trek start date. If the full payment is not received on time, your booking may be cancelled. The ₹10,000 booking fee is non-refundable under any circumstances.
Our cancellation policy applies to the entire trek fee, not just the booking amount. For any questions or assistance with payment, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Acclimatization is extremely important in Ladakh due to the high altitude. We keep buffer days in Leh before starting the ride so your body can adjust to the thin air. Our itinerary is carefully designed to give you enough time to adapt gradually.
Accommodation will be a mix of comfortable hotels/guesthouses in Leh and homestays/campsites in remote areas. We ensure clean, safe, and cozy stays with basic amenities suited for high-altitude conditions.
The best time is June to September, when the roads to Umling La are open and weather conditions are favorable for cycling.
This is one of the toughest cycling challenges in the world. Regular long-distance cycling, endurance training, and cardio workouts are recommended at least 2–3 months before the expedition. Building mental stamina is equally important.

We keep our group sizes small (10 – 15 participants) to ensure personal attention, safety, and a better experience for every cyclist.
Yes! You can bring your own cycle if it is well-serviced and suitable for high-altitude terrain. Alternatively, you can also rent a high-quality MTB with us.
Your safety comes first. If at any point you cannot continue, our backup vehicle will provide support and transfer. You can still be part of the journey with the group.
Yes . A support vehicle will accompany the group to carry luggage, camping gear, spare cycles, and medical kits. Riders can also take a break and ride in the support vehicle if unwell or extremely fatigued.
