Why is Valley of Flowers a Must-Do Trek?

The Valley of Flowers, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of India’s most stunning high-altitude Himalayan valleys, located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Perched at an altitude of 12,000 ft (3,658 m), this breathtaking valley bursts into a natural carpet of vibrant alpine flowers during the monsoon season, creating a surreal paradise for trekkers and nature lovers.

The trail passes through dense forests, cascading waterfalls, and glacial streams, with the majestic backdrop of peaks like Nilgiri Parbat. The valley is also home to rare Himalayan wildlife such as the blue sheep, Himalayan black bear, and snow leopard, along with numerous bird species.

Often combined with a visit to the sacred Hemkund Sahib (14,10ft), the trek offers both spiritual and natural charm. Starting from Govindghat and via Ghangaria, the trek is moderate in difficulty and perfect for those seeking both adventure and beauty.

ITINERARY

Day 1Dehradun to Joshimath

Drive Distance: 286 km | Drive Duration: 11-12 hours approx. | Altitude: Joshimatt – 1875m | Pick up point: ISBT, Dehradun.

Your journey begins with an early morning pick-up from ISBT, Dehradun. Drive along the picturesque mountain roads, passing through Rishikesh’s spiritual aura and crossing multiple river confluences — Devprayag (Bhagirathi meets Alaknanda), Rudraprayag (Alaknanda meets Mandakini), and Karnaprayag (Alaknanda meets Pindar). The route offers a blend of deep valleys, hanging bridges, and terraced mountain fields. By evening, reach Joshimath, a serene Himalayan town and base for several treks and pilgrimages. Check into your accommodation, and rest for the night.

Day 2Drive From Joshimath to Pulna and Trek to Ghangaria

Drive Distance:  20 km approx. | Drive Duration: 1 hour approx.| Trek Distance: 9 km approx. |  Trek Duration: 5-6 hours approx. | Altitude: Ghangaria – 3000m. | GPS DATA

After checking out, drive 20 km to Pulna, the roadhead for the trek. Begin your gradual ascent along the gurgling Pushpawati River. The trail passes through dense oak and rhododendron forests, wooden bridges, and charming tea stalls that offer brief resting points. En route, enjoy the sight of cascading waterfalls and distant snow peaks. By evening, arrive at Ghangaria, a quaint hamlet with basic lodges and the base for both the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib treks. Evening is free to explore the village and acclimate.

Day 3Trek to Valley of Flowers and Return to Ghangaria

Trek Distance: 4 km approx. | Trek Duration: 6-7 hrs approx. | Altitude: Valley of Flowers – 3600m. |  GPS DATA

After an early breakfast, take the trail towards the Valley of Flowers National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cross a wooden bridge over the Pushpawati River and enter a wonderland of alpine blooms. Depending on the season, the valley floor may be carpeted with blue poppies, Himalayan bellflowers, primulas, orchids, or the rare Brahma Kamal. Snow-capped peaks rise in the background, and streams meander through the lush meadows. Spend several hours exploring and photographing this Himalayan paradise before returning to Ghangaria in the evening.

Day 4Trek to Hemkund Sahib and Return to Ghangaria

Trek Distance: 6 km approx. | Trek Duration: 8-9 hrs approx. | Altitude: Hemkund Sahib – 4300m. | GPS DATA

This day is for a steep and rewarding climb. The stone-paved trail winds through high-altitude meadows filled with flowers like the Brahma Kamal. As you ascend, the air thins, and views open up to lofty peaks. At 4,300 m, reach Hemkund Sahib — a revered Sikh shrine beside a pristine glacial lake, reflecting the surrounding mountains. The peaceful atmosphere, chanting hymns, and the sight of pilgrims bathing in icy waters make this a deeply spiritual experience. After soaking in the serenity, descend carefully back to Ghangaria for an overnight stay.

Day 5Trek back to Pulna and Drive to Joshimath (BADRINATH OPTIONAL)

Trek Distance: 9 km approx. | Trek Duration: 5-6 hours approx. | Drive Distance: 20 km approx. | Drive Duration: 1 hour approx. | Altitude: Joshimath – 1875m. | GPS DATA

After breakfast, retrace your route back to Pulna, passing familiar landscapes and perhaps spotting birds or langurs along the way. On reaching Pulna, board your vehicle for the drive to Joshimath. If time and weather permit, make an optional detour to visit the sacred Badrinath Temple — one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites. Evening in Joshimath is free to relax or explore the local market.

NOTE: GovindGhat to Badrinath is a landslide-prone area in monsoon time, so if our leaders find that your safety is at risk due to weather conditions/ landslide, or road blockage, then we shall skip Badrinath altogether and drive to Joshimath directly. Transportation charges apply*

Day 6Drive from Joshimath to Dehradun

Drive Distance: 286 km | Drive Duration: 11-12 hours approx. | Altitude: Dehradun – 600m | Drop point: ISBT, Dehradun.

Begin your return journey, following the same scenic mountain route dotted with river confluences, small Himalayan towns, and roadside dhabas serving local delicacies.
