The Winter Markha Valley Trek is a rare and adventurous Himalayan journey that takes you deep into Ladakh’s remote landscapes during the frozen months of December to February. Unlike the popular summer trek, this version reveals a stark, snow-clad beauty of Ladakh — frozen rivers, icy trails, and traditional villages cut off from the world. Each day of the trek brings an exciting mix of challenges and rewards — from crossing frozen streams and navigating snow-covered paths to spending nights in remote homestays, experiencing authentic Ladakhi winter life.
The trek offers spectacular views of Stok Kangri, Kang Yatse, and other towering peaks, their white summits glowing under the crisp winter sun. Wildlife enthusiasts may even spot blue sheep, Himalayan foxes, and with a bit of luck, the elusive snow leopard. This is a perfect trek for experienced trekkers and thrill-seekers looking to explore Ladakh in solitude, far away from the crowds, and immerse themselves in the serenity of a frozen desert.
Altitude: Leh – 3500 m.
Your winter adventure begins as you land at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, Leh – one of the highest airports in the world, surrounded by towering snow-covered peaks. Our team will receive you at the airport and assist with your transfer to your pre-booked hotel.
Since Leh is situated at a high altitude of 3,500 m, it is crucial to spend this day allowing your body to acclimatize to the thin mountain air. Avoid any strenuous activity, stay well-hydrated, and keep warm. You may take a gentle stroll through Leh’s charming streets later in the day, explore the local market for handicrafts, or sip a hot butter tea at a cozy café while watching life go by in this frozen Himalayan town.
Evenings in Leh during winter are magical – the clear skies reveal a dazzling display of stars. Enjoy a traditional Ladakhi dinner and get a good night’s sleep to prepare for the upcoming adventure.
Altitude: Leh – 3500 m.
Today is dedicated to acclimatization, an essential step to ensure a safe and comfortable high-altitude trek. Begin your morning with a warm breakfast and plenty of fluids to keep yourself hydrated. The thin, crisp winter air can be challenging, so slow movements and light activity are recommended.
If the weather is clear, you can head out for an easy acclimatization walk around Leh. Visit the Shanti Stupa, a stunning white-domed structure perched on a hilltop that offers panoramic views of the snow-covered Ladakh range and the Indus Valley. You may also explore the Leh Palace, an ancient 17th-century palace that reflects Ladakh’s royal history, or simply stroll through Leh’s local bazaar, where you can experience the winter pace of life and sip a cup of hot butter tea or kahwa.
In the evening, our trek leader will conduct a comprehensive briefing session covering the upcoming trek itinerary, safety protocols, use of winter trekking gear, and tips for walking on snow and ice. This is also the time to double-check your gear and rent any additional equipment if needed.
As the sun sets, Leh transforms into a serene winter town with a blanket of stars overhead. Enjoy a hot dinner and rest early – your real adventure begins tomorrow.

Your first real adventure begins today. After an early breakfast, set out on a stunning drive from Leh to Chilling, passing through the dramatic confluence of the Indus and Zanskar Rivers. In winter, the Zanskar River partially freezes, creating breathtaking icy patterns — a photographer’s paradise.
Upon reaching Chilling, cross the suspension bridge over the frozen river and begin your trek to Skiu. The trail is short but a perfect introduction to walking on snow and ice. The sound of crunching snow beneath your boots and the complete silence of the valley make this a truly surreal experience. By afternoon, reach Skiu, a small, charming village with traditional mud houses. Settle into your warm homestay, sip a cup of hot tea, and watch the winter sun set behind the mountains.

The trail today becomes more challenging as you gain altitude and enter deeper into the wilderness. Snow gets thicker, and the air gets colder. The dramatic landscape keeps you motivated with stunning views of Kang Yatse Peak towering over the valley.
Arrive at Lower Hunkar, a peaceful, remote settlement where the starry night sky feels closer than ever. The silence and isolation here are unmatched — a perfect Himalayan winter experience.

After soaking in the vistas, begin your long trek back to Markha. Retracing the route feels different, as you see the valley from a new perspective. By evening, reach Markha and enjoy a hearty meal, grateful for the warmth of familiar surroundings.
